REQUIREMENT: INTEGRATED COMMUNICATIONS PLATFORM

The Suzuki MotoGP team approached their IT partner Blue Chip to deliver a unified communications (UC) platform to connect the team from any location around the globe; to improve collaboration and race performance.

The Suzuki MotoGP team is a truly global organisation - headquartered in the UK; engineering teams in Japan and the race team working across Europe, America, Asia and Australia throughout the race season.

The main problem faced by the team was how to collaborate and share information effectively when your engineers are on one continent and your bikes are on another. The race team feeds back telemetry information and the engineers assess that information and provide solutions. This is very difficult when personnel are spread across the globe and mobile.

The research into a UC solution highlighted that it could provide the team with improved collaboration and direct cost savings. A UC solution integrates the PHONE - calls, voice mail, and conferencing - the COMPUTER - documents, spreadsheets, IM, e-mail, and calendars - and PRESENCE - location, status and availability.

>> Solution

Blue Chip implemented a hosted Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007 and Office Live Meeting 2007 integrating them into the existing hosted Exchange Server 2007. Office Communicator was installed on all desktops, laptops and smart phones.

The Communicator tool allows team members to locate each other across the globe, find out their status, such as 'they are in a meeting' and intelligently choose the most appropriate method of communication, whether that is via IM, email, voice or video call.

The team was finding a large proportion of their working day was lost to failed communication, resulting in delayed workflow, feedback and bike improvements. The team is now able to collaborate effectively - speeding up decisions and improving performance. Furthermore, they have also found that mobile call spend has reduced as all internal calls are made using Office Communicator.
